Klaus Mann, son of the famous writer Thomas Mann, had a lot of akes and pain in his short life. Born at the 18th of November in 1906 in munich as the oldest son of Thomas Mann, he had to write in the very dark shadow of his popular father. –
Though – or just because – this ‚backpacker‘, he was able to express his mind with the books ‚Mephisto‘ (movie with the german actor Klaus Maria Brandauer), in my parent’s house, child of this time, and his modern autobiographie The Turnig Point.

Even if his with teen spirit filled and sometimes overboarding language not for the taste of everyone, someones just judge it’s bad style, but nevertheless and not damaged by those kind of attacs, he presents the readership open hearded what was going on that time and in his soul.

Even this mixture of personal experiences and critical views into things that happened at those time, makes The turning point to an extraordinary book.

One of the most running misunderstanding of his text and also the person of Jürgen Habermas is, that many people, students and professors, interpret this text, as Habermas wanted to prescribe people how to communicate. Even that is wrong. Habermas just wanted to trigger a discussion about the possibility of conversation without dominion or reign. He never really forced his model or wanted to prescribe the people how to communicate. We have to recognize, he ‚only‘ mentioned, that
It could be possible.
His model is present as asupposition in everyone who starts cconversation, communication or a discourse.
So it can be called an utopia of real conversation, communication and discourse. –

1995/1996 to 1998
Once upon a time, there was a room at university, where students came in and out, to have a coffee or two, to talk with each other, or to read and learn. It was the time between their seminars, or – at those times – maybe two hours between meetings with one of the professors. So some of them had very much time, and when they got rid of reading and writing, the played a game with cards, named SKAT. –
On friday afternoon, an author sat with another student in the café. They were waiting for the other students to leave into their weekend. She gave him some money and sent him to a supermaret to catch some wheat beer. For the author it was hard work: Both of them were looking forward o consume 12 half liters of that well-smelling beer. When he came back from the supermarket under the oak trees, he had to pt the beer in the frozer. Then he sat down to her. Five minutes later, he was feeling at home again, they began to talk. About philosophie, Friedrich Nietzsche, and german literature of the present times and the middle age. Walther von der Vogelweide, Parzival, the holy gral and the blue flower. These where the most important subjects in tnat case.
Another point of discussion from the now absent commilitones was the seperation of ‚epoches‘, becaus none could exactly say when precisely one epoche began or ended. Some extreme minded students just wanted to kill those words.
By the fact that most of the visitors of the café studied new german literature, there were often heard discussions about the idea of the word ‚epoche‘. The ones said, it was helpful to orientate about romans. The other said, it was a prison for the different styles and contents of the authors. They wanted just to read and enjoy literature, not put it into drawers. –
One older student just listened to the discussions, and picked out those epoches most interesting for him. Those were first the enlightenment: To think by oneself, to learn things after prooving them at one’s individual mind. Never have prejudges, never accept authorities! –
The second epoche fascinating the older student was romantic. Instead of mind and brain, here the voice of heart and emotion spoke louder, if it was not the only voice that time.. Love, the night, dreams, dark secrets, crazyness, and, last not least to remeber times, thoughts and things that happened somewhere in the past, this was the revolution of romantic. Even not only try to live here and now, but to remember what was the trigger of the present situation and action in the past. So one can say, to accept the influence of the past to the present situation here and now.. This starts with the language you’ve learned. That fact can be called ‚historicity‘ of action or communication: Nobody will invent the.wheel new.
One girl, who worked as a tutorial teacher, was prepairing her tutorials in the Goethropa. She had a look at the talkings and sometimes flirtings between the boys and the girls in the coffee. Also at herself and her own experiences. One day, perhaps two weeks later, there was a side of a journal laying on a desk, with a mirror on it.
This seemed to be her final solution for thr girls and boys trying something in the café… –
Another time in that café: „Life doesn’t make sense!“, one student shouted out. The atmosphere was loaded up with poison. In that way, nobody can learn anything or make one step further, thought the author, and tried to reflect the meaning of the word ’sense‘.
Sense is, what one can understand..
Sense is to enjoy or to suffer.
Absolute sense is, what is worthwhile to one person, the history or mankind.
Okay, these are the thoughts of a sceptical german philosopher, Odo Marquard.
Will the time come to let the students know? Does anything become better with these thoughts?

Some notes to the german writer Hermann Hesse
As a son of Baltic-German father, who was a missionary and a daugther of a missionary from Württemberg, Hermann Hesse was born on 2nd Juli of 1877 in Calw. Württemberg)
Beneeth his well known „Steppenwolf“ we wrote other important books: In „Narziß und Goldmund“ he describes the talking between two very different men. One of them is living in a monastery, the other one is living at the streets and fields outside. The passion of the first, Narziß, is to think, to make philosophical theories and to create works of art. The other one, Goldmund, prefers to live into the day, to enjoy eating and drinking, and – the women. It’s obvious, that these two live in very different worlds, what makes their dialogues the more interesting. Twenty years before, Hesse wrote a small book (just 90 pages), „Berthold“, with the same content. Perhaps to prepare „Narziß und Goldmund, which counts nearly 300 pages. –
Another example for the relationship of two books of Hermann Hesse are Morgenlandfahrt and Glasperlenspiel. Here we have the motives of serving the overpersonal and overindividual matter of mind, art and peace. The Morgenlandfahrt, written 1930/31, tells us about the lonelyness of a person who wants to grow her or his mind by studying and reading. Though this isn’t really amusing, Hesse makes some ironic jokes about the results of that lonely lifes. –
In the middle of the second world war, at 29th april of 1942, Hesse finished his Glasperlenspiel. The real beckground of that book was the political situation in Germany after the first world war and then the time of the dictator Adolf Hitler. Hesses intended to create a different plan of life then the 1000-year Reich planned byHitler. So he wrote the Glasperlenspiel. –
Back to the Steppenwolf: Some american readers my have misunderstood the message of the nearly crazy sentences of Hesse’s Steppenwolf. So they mad a rock bandcalled ‚Steppenwof‘ who sang the famous song born to be wilde. There seems also to exist a relationship to Aleister Crowly, a man who told people to consume drugs before reading the Steppenwolf. Musicians like Mick Jagger and Jimmy Page (guitarrist of Led Zeppelin) should seriously have read the books of Aleister Crowly. Even at the cover of The Beatles‘ album St. Peppes Lonely Heart Club Band (1967) one can see the photo of Aleister Crowly beneeth many other prominents.
So you can really get inspired by books of Hermann Hesse, even if you don#t consume drungs.

This week (48. KW) students of the Free University Berlin organize a so called PUBLIC CLIMATE SCHOOL. To create and fight for time and space for discussions, reflexions and – a little bit – self-finding. This also contents to find one’s own point of view in the clima-debate pehaps to plan some actions and demonstrations for the god thing.-
Two main matters have to be pointed out here: First, the experts have to prove to be experts to the audiance. How can they do that? This becomes the more difficult in our times, because everone and everybody can inform himself from the internet. So what wnna that man in the front tell us? –
The second matter concerns the presentation of the results of the scientists: They are specialistst have learned to find out facts about cloma. They didn’t learn to presentate these results to an audiance. To tell them as short as possoble and clear for that the audiance really understands. Okay, they didn’t visit a scholl for actorsabd it’s not their job, but to reach the aim to change some actions of people and countries to treat clima with care, that semms neccesary.
Because of these difficulties and also the question, if some young students really can change politics concerning clima, it may be not a lucky strike… –
Nevertheless, we have to adore their courage, power and energy. That really gives hope!
